Hydraulic tipping systems for tipper trucks and trailers

A tipping system is more than a cylinder. The pump, valve, tank, controls and mounting parts all have to match the truck and the load. FDA supplies each of these parts from HCIC and DMC, so you can buy a full kit or replace a single component.

This page lists the components, explains how they work together, and shows what to send us so we recommend the right setup for your truck or trailer.

How a tipping system works

The truck's engine drives a pump, usually through a PTO (power take-off). The pump sends oil from the tank to a control valve. When the driver operates the cab control, the valve directs oil to the cylinder, which lifts the body. Lowering reverses the flow. Safety valves and end-of-stroke units limit the movement at the top and bottom of the stroke.

Because each part affects the others, a pump that is too large for the cylinder, or a valve that does not suit the load, will cause slow tipping or unstable lifts. That is why we ask for the truck, the body and the load before quoting a kit.

Components we supply

Cylinders. Front-end telescopic and underbody types. See the hydraulic cylinders page.

Pumps. Gear pumps from 15 to 150 cc, maximum pressure 340 bar, up to 3000 rpm. Axial and bent-axis piston pumps from 20 to 130 cc, maximum pressure 400 bar, up to 3000 rpm. PTO adapters are available for both. See DMC gear pumps and HYVA gear pumps.

Valves. Electrically operated tipping valves for light tippers. Air-operated proportional tipping valves for medium, medium-heavy and heavy applications. Safety valves. See tipping and safety valves.

End-of-strokes. Pneumatic and mechanical units that add safety and control to the hydraulic system. See end-of-stroke units.

Cab controls. Air proportional controls with an integrated lifting and lowering function, with or without PTO control. See cab controls.

Oil tanks. Steel and aluminium tanks up to 250 litres, for side or rear-of-cab mounting. They are prepared for direct mounting of the proportional tipping valve and the return line filter, and mounting brackets for several chassis types are available. See hydraulic oil tanks.

Body fix. The bracket that connects the tipper body to the chassis. It protects the chassis from damage and reduces wear and noise while the truck travels empty. See tipper body fix.

Rear camera. An LCD display and rear camera so the driver can see behind the cab while unloading. See the rear camera system.

Power units for trailers and small tippers

For trailers and smaller tippers, a power unit combines the motor, pump, valve and tank in one package. A typical unit includes the solenoid valve and starter, relief valve, flow control, strainer, return tube, magnet plug, engine protector, oil tank, safety cable, and a remote control with connector. See the hydraulic power unit and the trailer power pack.

How to choose a setup

  • Light tippers and trailers. A power unit with electric control is usually enough.
  • Medium to heavy trucks. A PTO-driven pump with a proportional valve and a cab control.
  • Frequent tipping on long cycles. Ask about end-of-strokes for added control, and the rear camera for unloading.

What to send for a quotation

  1. Truck or trailer make, model and year.
  2. Body type and the load you carry.
  3. Whether the system is PTO-driven or a self-contained power unit.
  4. The existing parts if you are replacing, with photos and nameplates.
  5. The quantity.

Common questions

A cylinder, a pump, a control valve, an oil tank and a cab control, plus mounting parts such as body fix brackets. Safety valves, end-of-stroke units and a rear camera can be added.
